Position
The Public Safety Dispatcher provides dispatching services during emergency and routine assignments. The Communications Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with scheduled shift rotations every 6 months.
Daily duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Receive and relay emergency and nonemergency calls for assistance via telephone, radio and computer terminals
- Answer and/or redirect calls for information
- Prioritize and dispatch emergency calls for police, fire, medical aid, hazardous materials and allied agencies
- Monitor, acknowledge and input computerized alarm data for intrusion, robbery, fire, unknown trouble and facilities alarm systems
- Operate, update, and maintain computer terminals, including computer-aided dispatch and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, based on officer requests
- Dispatch units, such as police, fire, medial aid, security, parking enforcement and facilities, utilizing two-way radio systems
For lateral candidates with one year or more of recent experience in a 9-1-1 emergency dispatching center for fire or police, the department may consider waiving the online job-related skills assessment test portion of the examination process. All other interested candidates will be invited to participate in the complete process. The selection process consists of an online job-related skills assessment test that includes a typing test, oral interview, medical and psychological examinations, and a thorough background investigation.
Requirements
- A Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatchers Certificate is preferred, but not required.
- Have demonstrated abilities to understand and evaluate emergency and technical information, and relay as received over telephone and two-way radio.
- Have very good customer service skills and experience in interacting with the public on the telephone
- Ability to perform several tasks simultaneously, such as typing accurately on computer keyboards and operating a mouse, while talking on the telephone.
- Ability to hear multiple conversations simultaneously and obtain relevant information quickly and accurately
- Maintain accurate and legible records.
- Speak and write clearly and distinctly using correct English spelling and grammar.
- Remain courteous and professional under emergency and sensitive conditions
- React quickly, efficiently and calmly, and adopt an effective course of action in emergency and routine situations.
- Apply rules, regulations and procedures to varied situations.
- Work harmoniously with coworkers, campus units and the public.
- Remain seated for long periods of time.
- Have the ability to work 12-hour shifts, which may include working weekends and some holidays.
- Have the ability to be flexible as it relates to scheduling, as shift assignments rotate every 6 months and involve both day-watch shifts (6:00 am – 6:00 pm) and night-watch shifts (6:00 pm – 6:00 am).
- Have the ability to report for work or work past scheduled shift hours on short notice, and work overtime as required to ensure operational stability of the communications center
- Candidate must successfully complete all phases of the hiring process including physical and psychological exam, oral interview and thorough background investigation.
